Chair of the Department of Biochemistry and Microbiology
Peter Vandamme is Chair of the Department of Biochemistry and Microbiology (Ghent University) and director of the BCCM/LMG Bacteria Collection (http://bccm.belspo.be/). His research activities are focused on bacterial taxonomy and evolution, and the diversity and functionality of microbial communities. His main research interests are microbial diversity, evolution and taxonomy; high-throughput dereplication and identification of microorganisms, the genus Burkholderia, insect microbiology, food microbiology and unusual infectious agents in humans and animals. He received the WFCC Skerman Award for Microbial Taxonomy 2000 and Bergey Award 2002 for contributions to prokaryotic taxonomy.
